During the observance of Black History Month 10 TV spotlighted E.E. Ward, an established black-owned business deeply rooted in the abolitionist movement. E.E. Ward, which has evolved into a moving company can be traced back, to John T. Ward, who served as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. He bravely risked his life transporting individuals seeking freedom in and around Columbus using his wagon.
From Virginia, and then relocating to Columbus, Ward’s endeavors preceded the founding of the business in 1865 alongside his son after slavery was abolished. Over its 143-year journey, E.E. Ward has faced challenges such as segregation and discrimination while upholding a commitment to serving people of their race, beliefs, or background. In 2001, Brian Brooks acquired the company from Eldin, Ward’s godson further enriching the legacy beyond its roots. This narrative embodies a chapter in Columbus’ history and underscores the importance of acknowledging and learning from our shared past.
