Located in Columbus, Ohio, Italian Village is not only one of the historic districts, but also is recognized as an unique neighborhood in this multi-cultural city. What makes Italian Village so unique? As a certified mover in Columbus, Ohio, E.E. Ward would like to explore the special features of Italian Village with you.
Italian Village is known for its cultural preservation and mixed land use. It contains a collection of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Eighty-percent of the buildings are residential, including single family homes, double houses and row houses. Approximately ten-percent of the buildings are commercial and the rest are industrial buildings.
The uniqueness of Italian Village can also be attributed to its historic buildings, narrow brick streets, and pedestrian amenities like mature street trees and front porches. Its character also credits Italian style, which can be recognized in the mostly vernacular architecture of the neighborhood.
John the Baptist Italian Catholic Church was built for Italian immigrants who lived in nearby neighborhoods in 1898. Each fall, the church anchors the Columbus Italian Festival, a hub of good food and music, singing and dancing, bocce and films. The festival draws attention to the church and neighborhood.
The Berry Brothers Bolt Works building was constructed in 1888 and remains one of Columbus’ most prominent factory buildings, having been named a historic site in early 1988. The National Register of Historic Places deemed the building worthy because of its architecture, its place in local history, and its potential to be an industrial archaeological site. During its time of operation, the factory used original equipment to produce machine tools, like bolts, for factories that built buggies.
Strolling around Italian Village would be lots of fun! Walking on the narrow brick streets and surrounding by Italianate buildings, it makes you feel like strolling in a quiet town somewhere in mediaeval Italy.
