For those who have never heard about Title IX or think it only applies to sports, it is a law passed in 1972 that requires gender equity for boys and girls in every educational program that receives federal funding. There are 10 key areas addressed by this law which are: Access to Higher Education, Career Education, Education for Pregnant and Parenting Students, Employment, Learning Environment, Math and Science, Sexual Harassment, Standardized Testing, and Technology. Although Title IX is best known for breaking down barriers in sports for women and girls, it also opens the door for girls to pursue math and science, requires fair treatment for pregnant and parenting students, and protects students from bullying and sexual harassment, among other things.
Even though now women are said to gain more rights and become more influential than they ever historically accomplished, discrimination is still a main social challenge for every country and race. In the spirit of Title IX, we salute the work and dedication of groups like the Women’s Fund. Women and girls should know no boundaries when it comes to achieving their dreams.
