Making the transition from your lavish and perfected bedroom at home to a tiny room with cement walls can be difficult. To make yourself feel more at home, it’s important to decorate those drab walls and make the room your own. Try out some of these ideas to personalize those cement walls!
Personalize your room with pictures–
-Take a few long pieces of twine and secure them on the wall. Use clothespins to attach some of your favorite pictures. You could even try using sticky tack to fasten the clothespins onto the wall for easy removal at the end of the year. Use Sharpies or washi tape to decorate the clothespins.
-Take a piece of poster board and cut it out into your desired shape, such as the first letter of your name. Attach pictures to fit this shape and you’ll be all set to hang it up once you get to your dorm. Or you can simply secure the pictures straight on your wall to make your room feel more like home.
-Tape pictures onto the wall and use washi tape to make cute frames that you can peel off at the end of the year.
Use old or thrift store picture frames-
-Make a white board- Use an old picture frame and a piece of scrapbook paper that is cut to the size of the frame. The glass from the frame is the perfect surface to write on with dry erase markers. It’s as simple as that! Feel free to decorate the frame with your own embellishments or school colors.
-Make a desk organizer- Sew and glue fabric together to fit the size of the frame. Make sure the fabric is at varying levels so that it creates pockets where you can store letters, receipts, pens, etc. Or try this DIY no-sew memo board!
-Make an erasable calendar- Grab some sample paint strips of varying colors, enough for 31 days, and cut them up. Place them on a piece of white or scrapbook paper and put them in the frame. Use some dry erase markers to change up the days and the month each month and write important dates such as exams.
-Make a magnetic picture board Use a cookie sheet and cover it with scrapbook paper or fabric. Drill a hole in the top and attach a cute ribbon so that you can hang it up in your room. Add some magnets to post reminders, pictures, movie ticket stubs, etc.
-Make your own wall art Use a mirror and place letter stickers over it, spelling out your favorite quote or saying. Paint over the whole mirror, let it dry and then peel off the letter stickers. You can also try this with a canvas by painting a design, letting it dry, placing the letter stickers, and painting over them with a different color of paint.
-To line the inside of your drawers. Not only will it keep your drawers in good shape to avoid any fees from housing at the end of the year, but it will also add a little pizzazz to those beat-up dorm drawers. You could even use some bright wallpaper for this.
-With some starch to make a DIY wallpaper that you can easily remove at the end of the year.
-Use Mason jars Decorate them with paint, washi tape, fabric, etc., and use them to store anything you might have laying around, like pens, pencils, straws, or even flowers.
-Decorate your mirror Grab a full-length framed mirror and decorate the frame with sequins, rhinestones, seashells, washi tape, or anything else you can think of.
-Organize your cords
-Decorate different cords with different colors and patterns of washi tape in order to easily distinguish your cords.
-If you’re having trouble getting a cord to stay in place, such as your phone charger staying on your desk, try securing a binder clip onto your desk and placing the cord through it. Bonus points if you decorate the binder clip, too!
